Ambuluwawa Tower

Ambuluwawa Tower

  1. Ambuluwawa Mountain:

    • The tower stands atop Ambuluwawa Mountain, which is part of a nature reserve. The mountain itself rises to an altitude of about 3,685 feet (1,122 meters) above sea level.
    • The area surrounding the mountain is known for its rich biodiversity, with a variety of flora and fauna, including endemic plants and species that are native to Sri Lanka's central highlands.
  2. The Tower:

    • The Ambuluwawa Tower is a multi-storied structure that was constructed in the early 2000s. It stands at about 48 meters (157 feet) tall.
    • The design of the tower is unique, with a spiral staircase that winds its way to the top. As visitors ascend, they can enjoy incredible views of the surrounding valleys, hills, and distant mountains.
    • The tower’s top platform provides a 360-degree panoramic view, allowing visitors to see the nearby Knuckles Mountain Range, Victoria Reservoir, and even parts of Kandy and Colombo on clear days.
  3. Nature Reserve and Hiking:

    • Ambuluwawa is part of a protected biodiversity zone. The climb to the tower is a moderately challenging hike, but it is well worth the effort for those who enjoy nature and scenic views.
    • The journey to the top involves a combination of walking trails and stairways, with several points offering rest stops and views of the surrounding natural beauty.
    • There is a Buddhist temple at the base of the mountain, and the area is known for its tranquil atmosphere, making it a spiritual and serene location.
  4. Architectural Design:

    • The design of the Ambuluwawa Tower incorporates Buddhist and Hindu architectural elements, reflecting the cultural and religious diversity of Sri Lanka. The spiral tower's construction is considered an engineering feat due to its steep location and the challenges in building a structure at such an elevation.
  5. Biodiversity and Wildlife:

    • The surrounding area of Ambuluwawa Mountain is rich in biodiversity. It is home to a variety of flora, including medicinal plants and species unique to the central highlands of Sri Lanka.
    • It is also a haven for birdwatchers, as many species of birds, both native and migratory, can be spotted in the vicinity.
  6. Accessibility:

    • Ambuluwawa is accessible by car, and visitors need to hike up a well-maintained path to reach the tower. The site is open to the public for a small entrance fee, and it is a popular destination for both locals and tourists.
    • The tower can be visited year-round, though the weather conditions and the views are best enjoyed during the dry season (usually between November and April).
